Episode 17 - Addiction

I’m Mika, a qualified counsellor and founder of Meeks Counselling & Psychotherapy and today we’re talking about something that’s often really misunderstood… addiction.

Now, when people hear the word addiction, they often think of substances - drugs, alcohol - or they picture someone who’s completely lost control. And with that often comes a lot of judgment, a lot of stigma, and this idea that people should just be able to… stop.

But from a counselling perspective, it’s not that simple.

Addiction isn’t about weakness, and it’s not about a lack of willpower. It’s usually about something much deeper, ways of coping, ways of escaping, ways of getting through something that feels really difficult or overwhelming.

So in this episode, I want to break that down in a really honest and non-clinical way.

We’re going to look at:

What addiction actually is

why it happens

Why can’t people “just stop”

and what recovery can really look like
